A Victorian Magic Lantern Show and Christmas party in the Learning Room in the Museum of Somerset 10.30am – 12.30pm

4th November – Medieval Cartoons

Andrew Butcher is an expert on Medieval manuscripts and in his studies has come across some surprises! Find out about the Medieval sense of humour and the hidden jokes and cartoons in ancient manuscripts.

7th October – Stonehenge with Julian Richards

Julian Richards from TV’s Meet the Ancestors returns! Julian is one of the county’s leading experts on Stonehenge and wrote English Heritage’s Stonehenge Guide Book. Learn all about England’s most famous prehistoric monument and have a go at building a Stonehenge of our own!

1st July – MAYA One Year Anniversary

The anniversary of our first MAYA session!  We’ll be looking back at the past year and updating the Time Line we did with Laura in July 2016.

1st April – Geophysical Surveying

Our next session will be on Saturday 1st April and will be all about geophysical surveying!

We will be meeting at Stapleton Mead Farm, near Martock. Please email for exact directions.

PLEASE NOTE:  We have a limited amount of survey equipment and so in order to accommodate as many members as possible we will be holding two sessions.  Please email for more information and to book a place and say if you would prefer the morning or the afternoon session or if you have no preference.

Morning session:  9.30am – 12.30pm

Afternoon session:  1.30 – 3.30pm

6th May – Micro-archaeology

What can we learn from tiny artefacts which are too small and fragile to dig up? How do we get them out of the soil and what sorts of things can we find?

This session will take place in the Learning Rooms of the Museum of Somerset.

11th June – Visit to Ipplepen excavation in Devon

Please note this is the Second Saturday in June.

11th March – A visit to Somerset Heritage Centre

A visit to the Somerset Heritage Centre, Norton Fitzwarren, Taunton. Please note: This is the second Saturday in the month as the Somerset Records Office in the Heritage Centre will be open.

4th February – Buckskin, bogs and brains!

How did people in the past preserve animal skins, hides and furs and what did they use them for? A lively session with the return of Sally Herriett from our Launch event.
