4th October – Fyne Court

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO ADVERSE WEATHER.

Fyne Court on the Quantock Hills. Postcode TA5 2EH. 10.30am – 12.30pm. We will be joined by regional National Trust Archaeologist, Cat Lodge who will run a session looking at landscape archaeology and spotting features of the lost house and arcadian gardens. Parking is free to National Trust members or £5 per vehicle, parents and guardians are welcome to drop off and pick up free of charge. Please wear weather appropriate clothing and sensible footwear, the paths can get a bit muddy when it’s wet.

6th September: Visit to The Newt Roman Villa

The coach will leave from Castle Green outside the Museum of Somerset in Taunton at 10.30am.  Please be there at least 10 minutes before hand.  The coach will return to Castle Green at  4.30pm.  Please note there will be a £5 per person charge to help cover the cost of the coach.
You will need to bring:
  • Warm and waterproof clothing or sun hat and sun cream depending on the weather
  • Sturdy footwear
  • Lunch, drinks and snacks
The Newt is a reconstruction of a complete Roman Villa built on the site of the original villa discovered in 1832. The villa features a museum, a full-scale recreation of the original villa, and a glass bridge offering views of the original ruins.  It includes a bath house, hypocaust, mosaics, and a vineyard garden.  The villa is located in the grounds of The Newt Estate, a private hotel and gardens.
The Exhibitions Manager has kindly arranged free entry for MAYA members.  Unfortunately adults cannot pay for one day’s entry and you have buy a year’s membership which is £95!  Unfortunately this means that unless parents/carers are ok to join for the year, the visit will have to be for members only.  If you’re interested there’s more info on their website  https://thenewtinsomerset.com/

5th July – Avalon Archaeology Park

We will be returning to the Avalon Archaeology Park, Shapwick Road, Westhay, Glastonbury BA6 9TT.  11.30am to 2.30pm.
We will be walking out to the site of the Sweet Track, a famous prehistoric wooden trackway across the Somerset Levels.  After lunch we will be reconstructing part of the track using the same methods the Neolithic people did!  You will need to bring:
Long trousers (IMPORTANT – there are tics on the levels)
Sturdy footwear
Sun hat and sun cream
Warm and waterproof clothing
Lunch, drinks and snacks

3rd May – Excavation on Norton Fitzwarren Hillfort

We will meet at the Somerset Heritage Centre, Brunel Way, Norton Fitzwarren, Taunton TA2 6SF at 10am.  The session will end at 4pm back at the Heritage Centre.

The weather looks good so we will be walking from the Heritage Centre to Norton Fiitzwarren hillfort (about 10 mins walk).  We will be taken on a guided tour around the hillfort by the County Archaeologist Bob Croft and also digging a couple of test pits.

We will be outside all day so please bring:

Sturdy and practical footwear (Bob Croft stressed this)

Sunhat and sun cream
A warm coat/fleece as even thought it’s sunny the wind can be very cold at this time of year and there is no shelter on the hillfort
Lunch, drinks and snacks
Gardening gloves if you have them
Garden kneeler if you have one

Toilets are available at the Heritage Centre before we leave and we will do a toilet run back to the Heritage Centre at lunchtime.
